He was born July 20, 1930, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Goldielee K. Bowry Bonar and was reared by his grandparents, Holly G. and Georgia Lee Jones.

Bill was a graduate of PHS in 1949, where he was active in three sports. He had the distinction of being the first player named in 1949 to the North squad in the North/South Baseball Tournament held at Scott's Field. His great-grandfather, Richard Bowry, served in the Calavary during the Civil War, receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor. Bill continued the tradition and honor of serving his country by joining the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, serving from 1950-54, and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He retired from DuPont in August of 1984, where he mostly worked in the Teflon Department. He and his family spent much time at their farm they called "7-B Farm" on Youba Ridge in Torch, Ohio, where he loved to work with tractors and all farm animals, especially raising young calves.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Deem Bowry; five children, J. Dianne Modesitt and husband, Robert, of Vienna, Janeen Barrett and husband, David, of Lochloosa, Fla., Joan D. Florence and husband, David, of Parkersburg, Rick "Hank" Bowry and wife, Janie, of Parkersburg and Jill Sams and husband, Matt, of Parkersburg; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren .

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Roger Halstead officiating. Burial will follow at Parkersburg Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
