He was born August 31, 1928, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Arza C. and Hallie Miller Dawson.

Herbert was a U.S. Navy veteran, where he served as an electrician on the island of Okinawa in the South Pacific. He worked at E.I. Dupont, Washington Works for 17 years. He worked for the Gay and Taylor Insurance Company as an adjustor and retired from the Wood County schools after 19 years as an instructor of the Auto Body program. He was a member of Wayside United Methodist Church in Vienna for 63 years, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men, a member of the choir for over 50 years and was a senior high youth counselor for many years.

He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid gardener. Along with his students, he restored an old fire truck for the Vienna Jaycees that is still used in parades today. While at Parkersburg High School, he was instrumental for several years in collecting and repairing toys for Toys for Tots in the service of the Salvation Army. He served as an assistant Scout Master with Troop 21 in Vienna, which was chartered by the Wayside United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Duncan Boyce Dawson; three daughters, Carla (John) Dowler of Pine Knoll Shores, N.C., Connie (Craig) Frazier of Washington and Carol (Alan) Bialkowski of Newport, N.C; two step-sons, Terry (Vickie) Boyce of Ellenboro, W.Va. and Reverend Jerry (Kathy) Boyce of Lost Creek, W.Va; one brother, Donald Dawson of Parkersburg; four grandchildren, Julie Shepard, Jonathan Dowler and Matt and Mark Frazier; two great-grandchildren, Dawson and Hallie Shepard; five step-grandchildren, Megan Simpson, Leigh Ann Haller, Stephen Boyce, Carla Bowman, and T.J. Boyce; four step-great- grandchildren, Benjamin and Erik Simpson, and Charlie and Lydia Bowman; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Boston Dawson; one brother, Carl Dawson; and one sister, Ethel McMurray.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday at the Wayside United Methodist Church in Vienna with Dr. Patrick Kerr officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. The American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg will present full military honors at the church preceding the service.

Per Herbert's request, he has been cremated, and inurnment will be held at Sunset Memory Gardens at the convenience of the family. Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home and Cremation Services will be assisting the family with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wayside United Methodist Church Building Fund with envelopes provided at the church.2
