She was born Oct. 19, 1931, in Wheeling, W.Va., a daughter of Homer Boston of Lubeck and the late Mildred Stukey Boston.
Joan was retired from J.C. Penney; was a member of Wayside United Methodist Church, where she was active in the chancel choir and the United Methodist Women Agape Fellowship.

In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Herbert Dawson; three daughters, Carla Dowler and her husband, John, of Greensboro, N.C., Connie Frazier and her husband, Craig, of Lubeck and Carol Bialkowski and her husband, Alan, of Newport, N.C; four grandchildren, Julie Shepard and her husband, Ray, of Baltimore, Md., Jonathan Dowler of Greenville, N.C., Matt Frazier of Davisville and Mark Frazier of Orlando, Fla; one great-grandson, Dawson Shepard of Baltimore, Md; and another one soon to be born.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Stukey Boston.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Wayside United Methodist Church, Vienna, with the Rev. Dr. Joseph S. Kenaston and the Rev. Sandy Runnion officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 3005 Grand Central Ave., Vienna, and at the church one hour prior to services Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wayside United Methodist Church Building Fund.
