He was born March 24, 1913, in Rockport, a son of Joseph and Marie VanFossen Shepard. He was a mechanic for Kaiser Aluminum with 17 years of service and was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army. He was a member of United Steel Workers Local 5668, the SOAR Club and the Old-Timers Club and was a well-known piano tuner, having overhauled several player pianos. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Steele Shepard; two sons, Ronald Shephard of Grove City, Ohio, and Harold Shepard Jr. and his wife, Patty, of Beverly; two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Fred Owens of Belpre, Ohio, and Shirley and Forrest Thomas of Ripley; one sister, Viva Gorrell of Parkersburg; 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Shepard. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Vail Funeral Home, Ripley, with the Rev. Danny Cummings officiating. Burial will be in Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville, with military rites by Jackson County veteran groups. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
