He was born July 22, 1910, in Smithville, W.Va., a son of the late John and Agnes Garvin Deem.

He retired from Union Carbide as a welder and continued his love of ironwork, working in his workshop at home. He also enjoyed having a big garden and holding cookouts for his family and friends. He was also a U.S. Army veteran, where he served as a bugler. As a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Claremont is considered the last “real son” of Wood County since his father served in the West Virginia Infantry of the Civil War.

He is survived by his son, Donald G. Deem and wife, Judy, of Devola, Ohio; one daughter, Mary Burdette Wildt and husband, Gary, of Leachtown; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren; daughter-in- law, Lindy Deem of Parkersburg; and niece, Helen Summers Cokeley of Harrisville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Arline Jacobson Deem; his second wife, Veva Lemon Deem; his most recent wife, Emily Miller Deem; four children, Robert Claremont Deem, Brice Andrew Deem, Barbara Agnes Raymond and William Carl Deem; two brothers, Robert and Herbert Deem; two sisters, Mildred Deem and Isabelle Summers; and 18 half brothers and sisters.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. John F. Koerner officiating. Burial will follow at Westfall Cemetery, Smithville, W.Va. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

THURMAN - The recent passing of Claremont Deem of Wood County W.Va., ends another chapter in American history.

Mr. Deem, the last child, "Real Son" of Union Civil War soldier Cpl. John Deem of Company E, 11th West Virginia Infantry, answered his final muster on Jan. 26, 2006.

Claremont was born July 22, 1910, as the 23rd child of Cpl. John Deem, who mustered into the Union Army Aug. 28, 1862, and remained until mustered out June 17, 1865.

John Deem was 69 years old when Claremont was born and lived until 1920. Claremont was 10 years old when his father died. Claremont was a member of the Benjamin Fearing Camp 2 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, located in Marietta, and is the sister camp to Cadot-Blessing 126 of Gallipolis.

The members of both camps served as honor guards at Mr. Deem's funeral and escorted his remains to the cemetery. They held Civil War military honors with flag folding and musket firing. Claremont was laid to rest beside his father on 6 April 2006 at Gallipolis Daily Tribune, Gallipolis, OH.
